HTPC: Zotac ION + Gentoo + XBMC

Back in 2002 or 2003, I discovered a project that mounted a Mini-ITX motherboard in a Sun SPARCstation case. It captured my 16 year old mind and I was eager to complete it. Unfortunately, I had no real reason nor funding to do so. With the arrival of my 2010 tax returns, however, I found myself in need of an HTPC. This reminded me of the dusty Sun Microsystems case sitting atop my bookshelf and my nearly decade-old ambitions.

An unmodified Sun SPARCstation IPC

A Theory on NTFS-3G

I first heard about NTFS-3G back in August of 2007 when I was home on leave. It blew my mind, because it was a flawless solution to a problem I, and every other Linux/Windows dual-booter, had been dealing with for years. Needless to say, I’ve been using it and loving it ever since.

Uh oh, slippy clutch

On my way home from the gym tonight, I was doing maybe 55MPH in 5th gear on I-88. I stepped on the gas to pass a truck and make my exit, and after I passed the truck, my tach began to climb a little to fast and unevenly. It got to about 5,000RPM and I let off the gas, only going about 70MPH. I let off the gas and took it out of gear while coasting down to a stop sign. I did a pull or two from each gear, seeing if I could recreate the behavior, but without success. So, I imagine I’ll be having to replace my clutch in the next year or so.

A quick visit to our friends over at ECS Tuning revealed three potential choices.

Tricks Tonight

Yesterday, a friend of mine helped to figure out what’s been wrong with my right leg. According to some thorough internet research, I have iliopsoas tendinitis. Go figure, the iliopsoas group are the muscles that are essential for lifting your leg to the front. So, I’ll have to be stretching and resting the muscle group for at least a couple of weeks. No more 540′s or pop 9′s.

Gentoo, this time around (part 1)

In the past, I’ve had nightmarish difficulty configuring Gentoo such that it worked in a predictable fashion. This time around, however, it went marvelously.

This article will cover optimizing make.conf further than the Gentoo Handbook advises you on, working with NVIDIA’s TwinView, and getting double-wide wallpapers to display properly across two monitors in Gnome 2.30.2 (and newer, until Gnome fixes it).
